Demo day at 4230 Raleigh Street… let the fun begin.

After a six week delay due to asbestos mitigation and tree protection issues with the City of Denver Building Department we were finally cleared and ready for demo on 4230 Raleigh Street.

The demo contractor hadn’t given us a start time but as Jenn and I walked to Tenn Street Coffee to get her some caffeine this morning the backhoe was being unloaded and it looked like things would be rolling along sooner rather than later. Wondering if I had any decent shots of the original structure I decided to stick around and start documenting the process while Jenn headed up the street to carry out the original mission.

I spoke with the contractor and we walked the basement of the existing home so that he could figure out the best method of destruction. Given the tight quarters this seemed like a prudent idea. After some last minute salvage by one of the neighbors (he asked if he could take the mailbox as his wife had been bugging him about theirs being inadequate for who knows how long) we were ready to go.

Due to lack of access from the front of the lot and concern for our own safety, my shots aren’t from the best angle. As you can see, the house didn’t put up much of a fight. Being made primarily of wood, it came down quickly.

Once the house was leveled, the contractor proceeded to mash up the debris and compact it in the basement. Jenn and I both noted how little debris actually needed to be carted off. The vast majority of the home fit into one truckload.

Final demo and rough grading of the hole will be finished up shortly and then the construction fencing and on site facilities will be delivered and installed.

I picked up the excavation and shoring permit this afternoon at the building department so things should be moving along as soon as Friday on getting the shoring installed.
